About Us

Broad Street United Methodist Church, founded in 1875, is centrally located in downtown Columbus in the “Discovery District,” with a mixture of large and small corporations, four college campuses, many cultural institutions, and adjacent to the historic Olde Town East neighborhood.

Broad Street UMC is “The Church in the Heart of the City with the City in its Heart!” The congregation bears witness in word, faith, and action to the good news of Christ. Whether a member or someone who walks in off the street, everyone related to Broad Street UMC hears the message of God’s transforming love.

Be Loved

God loves us all. And at Broad Street United Methodist Church, we invite everyone to feel that love, not just on Sunday mornings but every hour of every day. It doesn’t matter who you are. Or where you live. Or what you have done or not done. Our church is a place of authenticity in a world aching for something real, and when you enter into communion with us, you will be welcomed and loved by us…just as you are. We don’t want to change you; we want to help you embrace the person you were meant to be through the grace of Jesus Christ.

Be Love

As we share God’s love with you, it is our profound hope that you will take that love into the world to share with others. Just as our beloved community opens its doors to one and all, we make every effort to open our hearts to those whom God calls us to love. We know that God gave you remarkable gifts, and our mission is to help you recognize them and use them to help others.

Belong

A church is only as strong as its people. Beyond our invitation to love and be loved, we also invite you to join us. All of the people of this congregation have their own reasons for coming here and their own reasons for staying, but each and every one of them says they’ve never before felt such joy or such a wonderful sense of belonging to something greater than themselves. So, come sing in our choir or serve meals to our neighbors. Join one of our support groups or sign up for bible study or share your creative gifts. Our community can’t help but be brighter and more blessed with you in it.

From our 19th-century Gothic Revival building on the corner of E. Broad Street and S. Washington Ave, we practice a forward-looking theology that has its roots in tradition.

Believing that love of God is always linked with love of neighbor, we welcome people of all ages, sexual orientations, gender identities, races, economic abilities, and mental and physical capacities. We put our faith in Christ into action because we understand that faith and good works go together. And we know that, as church founder John Wesley so aptly put it, “There is no religion but social religion, no holiness but social holiness.”

Here, grace is defined as the love and mercy given to us by God because God wants us to have it, not because of anything we have done to earn it. And we continually call upon that grace to love God and one another in return.
