A Great Field Trip

Thanks to all who joined us for yesterday’s field trip to the Columbus Museum of Art! We had a total of 42 people join us for the outing, which far exceeded our expectations. A larger-than-expected group meant CMoA’s Cindy Foley had to pivot at the last minute to accommodate all of us, and she did a wonderful job guiding our learning and viewing of Raphael’s Dresden Tapestries. A special thanks to Cindy for helping us make this fun outing a reality. We hope to do more field trips in the future, so keep an eye and an ear open for future opportunities.

Columbus CROP Hunger Walk - Sunday, October 9th

Friends,

The CROP Walk is next weekend! Team Broad Street will gather after church and walk as a team, rain or shine, downtown at the Scioto Audubon Metro Park. Here are a few reminders for Walk Day from our friends at Church World Service. There are options for everyone, whether you choose to walk or not:

  • Registration begins at 12:30 pm and the Walk Send-off will be at 1 pm on October 9 at Scioto Audubon Metro Park’s Maier Place Pavilion - or you can watch our LiveStream via our social media! We will have an invocation, words from our Event Coordinator Ashley Montana, a brief word about CWS, and a presentation from our special guest!

  • WALK! Walk with us in person, around your block, walk around your neighborhood, walk in a local park, or simply walk around your living room! Your comfort level can determine how you choose to walk (you can walk individually or with your team – or all or part of your team can join us in person). No matter how you choose to walk, we will find ways to engage Walkers whether in-person, hybrid, or virtually!

  • SHARE YOUR PHOTOS! We want to see YOU and YOUR TEAMMATES! Share your photos and videos with us by posting them to our Facebook page (facebook.com/centralohiocrop), Facebook event, tag us on Instagram (@CentralOhioCROP), use #CentralOhioCROP or email them to columbuscrophungerwalk@gmail.com!

Team Broad Street's CROP Walk page is https://events.crophungerwalk.org/2022/team/broad-street-umc. On this page, you may join the team as a walker or securely donate to the team or any individual walker.  Online donations are easiest, but we also gladly accept cash or check donations, payable to CWS/CROP. Our fundraising goal is $1500 and we have already raised $345 online. No internet? No worries! You may simply show up and walk with us! The story and photos below illustrate some of the many ways our donations are used to make a real difference around the world. Please continue to pray for those who suffer from hunger and food insecurity.  We will walk until there is Enough For All.

Blessings,
Shelley Hobson

Farmers in Haiti Adapt to Climate Change

If you have ever owned a plant, you know that one of the most important factors in ensuring that your plant survives is the health of its soil. Too much water and your plant might turn yellow. Too little and your plant might slouch over. As temperatures and CO2 levels increase due to climate change, farmers around the world know this challenge well as they struggle to create the necessary soil conditions for their crops to thrive.

In Haiti, we are working to withstand these effects by teaching local farmers soil conservation techniques. These workshops teach members of the community how to build contour canals and rock walls that protect the soil, reduce the risk of erosion, and increase the fertility and productivity of crops.

Sadira Jeanty, 76, lives in Nabou with his wife and five daughters. Sadira, who has been struggling with financial instability, joined our training sessions to learn a new way to generate income and care for crops. He shared, “At that training, I learned how to build rock walls and contour canals to diminish the force of the water descending onto our fields so that the soil can remain in place.” By participating in our program, Sadira was also able to earn an income that he can use to pay off existing debts and focus on his crops.

Heart of the City Foundation Walk

The Annual Heart of the City Foundation Walk will take place on Saturday, October 15th at 10:00 a.m. here at the church. The Heart of the City Foundation is taking a more informal approach to the Walk this year. There is no registration required. Instead, supporters are encouraged to make a donation prior to the Walk using the HOTCF website: heartofthecitycolumbus.org, Choose “donate” at the top of the home page.

Fall Bible Study

As a Bible study opportunity this fall, we will be exploring some of Jesus' most famous stories, or parables. Our curriculum will center on the book, Short Stories of Jesus: The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi, by Dr. Amy-Jill Levine.

Held on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom, each Bible study session will consist of prayer, scripture, and discussion. The dates for the study meetings are 10/11, 10/18, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8, and 11/15. You do not have to be able to make all dates to be able to join! Contact Pastor Angie with questions.

Over the past few years, Broad Street has opened its doors on the morning of the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Columbus Marathon and Half Marathon. We are a great spectator spot and welcomed many people looking to get warm, grab a coffee and/or a snack, and or use the restroom while watching for their favorite runners—and sometimes the runners themselves!

Because streets downtown close early, volunteers will need to arrive by 6:45 a.m., and you’ll want to keep an eye on the weather and dress accordingly! If you’d like to join us on Marathon morning, Sunday, October 16 to provide hospitality to the community, please contact Pastor Angie.

“When Kids Come Out” – A Four-Session Class for Parents of LGBTQ+ Children Offered on Zoom

When a child comes out to their family, it often raises many questions for both the child and for the family. For example:

  • What does it mean for the family when a child comes out to their parents?

  • What does it mean for the parents’ relationship to their church?

  • What does it mean for the parents’ own faith?

  • How do parents navigate their own “coming out” after their children have come out to them?

  • What is the impact on you and your family and especially your LGBTQ+ child if the congregation you attend is considering disaffiliation from the United Methodist Church or has voted to disaffiliate from the UMC?

The sessions are designed to provide a safe space where questions and concerns can be dealt with openly and honestly.

Wednesdays, Oct. 26, Nov. 2, 9, 16

This session of the class will be held on Zoom this fall. The meetings will begin at 7:00 pm and conclude by 8:30 p.m.

If you want to participate in the class, please email Jim at jwaugh3@mac.com. Put “Kids Class” in the Subject line. A few days prior to the class session, you will receive a Zoom invitation from Jim for the sessions.

The Rev. Jim Waugh, a retired pastor in the West Ohio Conference, will lead the group. Jim and his wife, Carol, have an adult daughter, Lisa, who came out to them over twenty years ago. Jim just completed a four-year term as the chair of the Parents Reconciling Network Board (a group related to the Reconciling Ministries Network).

If you have questions or need more information, please feel free to email Jim at jwaugh3@mac.com.
