Daylight Saving Time ends next Sunday.

Don’t forget to set your clocks back 1 hour Saturday night!

Election Day Hospitality – November 7
Volunteers needed

Sign-up for a 2-hour shift to greet voters indoors at the church’s “ramp entrance” (Washington Ave) and direct them to the gymnasium for voting.  Bring a book, ipad/tablet, knitting/crochet/needlepoint, or other hobby to work on while you’re here welcoming neighbors to our building.  The report from the August Election Day volunteers is that it was “fun and easy!”  Sign-up on the website at broadstreetumc.net/current-sign-ups

All Saints Sunday
November 5th

On November 5th we will remember all who are part of the communion of saints, and especially those from this congregation who have gone before us in faith during the past year.  We will give thanks for both the saints in glory and those on earth, who have led us to Jesus.

From the early days of Christianity, there is a sense that the Church consists of not only all living believers, but also all who have gone before us. On All Saints Day, we recognize that we are part of a giant choir singing the same song. It is the song Jesus taught his disciples; a tune that has resonated from more than 2000 years; a melody sung in glory and on earth. Our great privilege, on this day especially, is to add our voices to this chorus!

As the Saints have shared the gospel with us, may we also add our voices so someone else may hear about the grace and love of Jesus Christ as we celebrate this holy day. Thanks be to God for the lives of God’s saints.

You’re invited…
November 5

Dear Friends,

Do you have a will? Do you have an estate? If you own anything - even a car - you have an estate. And it's important to make sure you have a solid plan for that estate. And as children of God who faithfully support Broad Street United Methodist Church, we hope you will also make sure that your legacy lives on and Broad Street's mission carries on far into the future.

As we look forward to the upcoming Generosity campaign, we are pleased to offer this special session and lunch on November 5th, with Susan Black, Executive Director of the United Methodist Foundation of West Ohio. Susan will discuss ways every person can make a major charitable impact through their estate planning. Topics will include easy planned gifts, bequests, charitable gift annuities, charitable trusts, and individual endowments.

Bethlehem On Broad Street
Update

In the both Creation stories (yes, there are two Creation stories), God worked six days, and then God rested - in part, to see all that had been created, and to say, “it is good!” In similar ways, God instructs us, as co-creators with God, to work, and then to rest.

Bethlehem on Broad Street (“BOBS”) has a long history of compassion, justice, mercy, and relationships at Broad Street. BOBS was borne out of a specific set of needs that existed in the downtown area many years ago. In the years since “BOBS’” inception, the downtown area has changed, evolved, and grown. Downtown has seen new housing and new residents appear, as well as older housing and long-time residents vanish. We’ve seen new agencies emerge to meet existing needs. We’ve seen the city respond to homelessness and food insecurity in new and familiar ways. We’ve seen the needs for affordable housing, healthcare, and mental health help centers rise, and continue rising. And in the midst of all of this, Broad Street, has faithfully maintained our participation in the BOBS holiday-needs program. And we have grown tired.

Broad Street’s BOBS leaders have determined that the time is right for us, as co-creators with God, to rest this year - to take a step back from all that has been created with and by BOBS, and to simply proclaim, “it is good!” And then rest.

To that end, 2023 will be sabbath. It will be a sacred time of resting and renewing - not merely “time off.” The BOBS leaders and I will continue watching our neighborhood, meeting neighbors, looking for new needs and opportunities, and return in 2024, rested, renewed, and ready to see where God is calling Broad Street to love our neighbors next.

For all of you who have been part of the BOBS celebrations in the past, thank you for the legacy you have created, shaped, molded, offered, and maintained. The 2023 sabbath will be time for us to embrace that legacy, nurture it, and come back in 2024 ready for the next chapter of BOBS ‘24.
