The Builder

January 2023

Pearls for the New Year…

Happy New Year, dear ones! I pray you enjoyed a safe and blessed Christmas celebration in ways that were meaningful and fulfilling to you, and a joyous new year celebration, as well.

This January edition of The Builder is coming to you a few days later than usual, so that we had time to shift our attention from all that Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day planning and celebrations, to the new year ahead. How is it the end of the first week of the new year already?

I have only a few items to share with you in this January article, before we dig deep into planning for the year ahead in February, while also preparing for Lent 2023.

But before we get there, few items to note:

1 Did you know you can print your own year-end giving statements for tax records? You can access your giving records to create giving reports year-round, using the same online church database account you use to update your address/telephone information. So, if you’re ready to start working on taxes before you receive year-end statements from Broad Street, you can print your own anytime. Otherwise, know that the Finance Team WILL BE SENDING year-end statements as they have every year.

2 In keeping with the Leadership Board’s intention to offer occasional coffee-hour receptions after worship, while still being intentional about keeping us COVID-safe, we’ll have two different coffee-hour receptions during the month of January:

January 8 Coffee Hour Reception is to honor long-time choir member Nicki King’s retirement from the Chancel Choir, after nearly 30 years of dedication. Plan to stick around after worship to honor and celebrate Nicki.

January 29 Coffee Hour Reception is to honor our seminary intern, Karen White’s, graduation with her Master of Divinity degree, and the beginning of her Doctor of Ministry program. We are delighted Karen will be able to remain with us this winter and spring!

Consider bringing a card to celebrate both of these dedicated servants and leaders, or mail your well-wishes to the church office and we’ll make sure the cards get to them at Broad Street UMC, 501 E. Broad St, Columbus, OH 43215.

3 Looking for a support group? Let us know what kind of support group you’re seeking, and we’ll do our best to help make a connection. Or, maybe you feel called to lead a support group at Broad Street in 2023? Prayerfully consider it, and let Pastors John or Angie know how we can work with you to establish a new ministry or support group at Broad Street.

Well dear ones, I wish you a blessed and healthy start to this new year. I’m busy working on a few new goals and programs for us in 2023 and will look forward to sharing these with you soon.

Until then, may the light of the Christ-Child guide you into new beginnings this January.

Much love to you,
Pastor John Girard

Columbus Coalition for the Homeless Report

The Winter Warming Center has opened for the winter season and is housed in the Broad Street UMC gymnasium. The Warming Center has hired a number of new staff, many who are Certified Community Health Workers, and the Center is now open 24/7; this new schedule began on December 15 and will continue through March 15, 2023. Guests at the Warming Center find in Broad Street’s gymnasium the blessings of hot coffee, snacks, free clothing, and a host of city/community resource connections to be made, all of which secure IDs, birth certificates, mental/emotional and physical medical care, transportation, and permanent housing. Thank you, Broad Street, for your mission to be “a building, a people, and a place of inclusive welcome for those seeking justice and relationships for all people.
