Thanksgiving & Advent Special Edition
For the past few years, particularly during the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic, you, Broad Street, have helped make a wonderful Thanksgiving for our neighbors who live in shelters or on the land. This year, the Columbus Coalition for the Homeless Warming Center will be open all of Thanksgiving Day, and they would love to be able to offer a homemade Thanksgiving Day meal for those who have nowhere to go on that day. We’re hoping Broad Street will once again be that beacon of light and love to our immediate neighbors by providing a home-cooked meal.
The SignUpGenius link below offers more details on what you can bring; however you cook a dish is fine—if you’d put on your own family’s table, it’s welcome for this table!
Introducing Our Advent Series
Advent begins on Sunday, November 27th! This year’s Advent series, created by A Sanctified Art, LLC, is called From Generation to Generation. As the creators of this series read through and studied the scriptures they selected, a line from Mary’s song of protest and praise gave them pause:
Surely, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for the Mighty One has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
His mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
(Luke 1:48b-50)
Despite the challenges and vulnerability she faced, Mary could glimpse the scale and scope of the good news she was part of bringing forth. This good news transcends time and space—it was and is bigger than just her. Christ is coming for collective liberation: God’s redemption is at work for years to come. Therefore, the promise is meant to be lived out and passed on from generation to generation.
We are invited to look at the characters in our scriptures and wonder: What did each character pass on or contribute? How did each character participate in God’s liberation and love? Which characters try to thwart God’s justice and what can we learn from them? What is our role now? What is our generation’s task? What will we carry forth, and what should we leave behind?
The root word of “generation” is “gen” meaning “origin” or “birth.” Our theme is also a call to action: what are we being called to generate or bring forth? What have your ancestors and those who have come before you passed on for you to continue? Who are the spiritual elders in your community who planted the seeds for the things that are now blooming? What seeds are you planting for the future?
From Generation to Generation… reminds us of the ways our lives, histories, actions, and stories are interconnected and woven together. In the midst of narratives, policies, and rhetoric designed to divide us, what does it look like to practice belonging to one another? The work of God is always unfolding—in and through us. This Advent season, how will we carry it forth?
Below is a sampling of the art created specifically for this Advent series; you can read more about these pieces and more in the Advent devotional. Details included following the artwork.

2022 Bethlehem on Broad Street
Saturday, Dec. 10, Starting at 9:00 a.m.
The BOBS Christmas Party is back this year! Each year, we review the Bethlehem on Broad Street program to understand how our efforts made an impact on those receiving services. The pandemic necessitated changes to how we engaged in ministry for the safety of our guests and volunteers, and now our planning team believes it is time for us to come back inside for Bethlehem on Broad Street 2022. Rather than food boxes this year, the ministry event will be geared toward meeting some of the needs of the daily guests who are supported by the Warming Center that Broad Street hosts. Though the focus will be different, we’re still going to have a party, and we’ll need your help to do it!
In the gymnasium, there will be an all-day Resource Fair filled with all kinds of assistance and advocacy groups, working to help our neighbors who are unhoused and living on the land. AND, in Jim Thomas Hall, we’re having a Christmas party! Guests will receive hygiene bags and other assorted items (instead of food boxes this year), and cookies/treats and hot chocolate/coffee will be available, all while Christmas music entertains in the background. Santa pictures are back this year, too!
The party is one of the best parts of BOBS each year, and it’s one part we’ve all missed over the past two years of being outside due to Covid-19 risks. We do hope that you’ll find a spot to volunteer and celebrate the Christmas spirit with our neighbors; to do so, sign up below!
